Art and urban (re-) generation<\/p>\n

In 1993, American artist Rick Lowe initiated the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Project Row Houses\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, a project in which art, architecture and project development join pairs with education and social welfare to give one of Houston\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s most poor neighborhoods new impetus. In April 2007 Andrew Cannon, Maaike Gouwenberg, Camila Marambio, Annette Schemmel, Karolin Tampere and Magdalena Ziolkowska, the curators of the Curatorial Programme 2006\/2007, organized “THE GO-BETWEEN”, a series of artists\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 projects which took place in the Bijlmer, in South East Amsterdam. “THE GO-BETWEEN” was inspired by the Bijlmer and the observation that it is a place in ‘a constant state of becoming’. By developing the projects \u00e2\u20ac\u2122on the site\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, in and around an apartment in one of the characteristic blocks of the Bijlmer, a dynamic dialogue was created, which presented itself in the art works as well as in the involvement of the neighborhood. Curator Emiliano Gandolfi made the exhibition \u00e2\u20ac\u0153A Better World – Another Power\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (on view in NAi, Rotterdam, until October 20th), which displays works by groups whose consultative initiatives, spontaneous creativity and activism is like a fresh breeze blowing through the urban planning world. These projects are the starting point for an discussion that presents different perspectives on the role of art in the processes of urban (re-) generation.<\/p>\n

The curators of CP 2006\/2007 offer a dinner to anyone who wishes to join afterwards which there will be informal presentations by artists that participated in “THE GO-BETWEEN”. With a presentation of the new film by Frank Koolen, reflective talks with Marjolijn Dijkman, Frank Koolen and Jeffrey Croese and contributions by people from the Bijlmer.<\/p>\n

The Living Catalogue<\/p>\n

This section of the evening is part of The Living Catalogue, in which the participants of the CP 2006\/2007 challenge the notion of the printed catalogue by choosing to communicate their collaborative project THE GO-BETWEEN via the medium of presentations, talks, events, film screenings, interviews, food give-aways and discussions, in as many locations that show interest to host this choice of format. The movie \u00e2\u20ac\u0153THE GO-BETWEEN, a Documentary\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by Jeffrey Croese and Kenneth Aidoo, until October 7th on view in the Shadow Cabinet, is also part of The Living Catalogue. In the near future the The Living Catalogue tour will continue in the Visitor’s Center in Bergen, Norway, (29 September 2007), Monkey Town in New York (9 October 2007), the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven (November 2007), and on locations in London, South America and the United States.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Bijlmer Light\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, the performative sculpture that Mark Hosking (UK) developed for \u00e2\u20ac\u0153THE GO-BETWEEN\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, is presented in an elaborated form in the atrium of the Cultural Educational Centre in the Bijlmer in Amsterdam South-East.<\/p>\n
