Beginning in late 2006, THE GO-BETWEEN got started in the Bijlmer, a suburb in the South-East of Amsterdam. The Bijlmer, a fascinating and complex neighborhood, is an intriguing place for contemporary cultural reflection, due to its particular architectural history of utopian city planning and to the dynamics of immigration that have shaped its identity and image during the past 40 years.

After a number of months spent getting to know the Bijlmer, a series of nine art projects were realized there during the month of April 2007 and some continue occur. These projects, developed by a group of eleven international artists, gravitated around an apartment in one the Bijlmer’s characteristic building blocks, Florijn 42. Performance, video, music, and temporary sculpture were some of the mediums used by the artists whose works consistently involved the local audiences as participants and viewers.

Florijn 42, which had been rented out to function as a base camp for whatever activity, relevant to the curatorial thinking, became a pivotal force in defining the character of THE GO-BETWEEN. The apartment served as a versatile meeting point, a semi-private/semi-public space for asking questions and making invitations. Transforming into a restaurant, studio, stage and cinema, Florijn 42 was a place from where to challenge ideas of audience and audience participation. Seven Bijlmer Nites, each curated by one of the CP’s participants, and a dozen Sunday afternoon events, Soup&Cinema’s, attracted a multi-faceted public to the apartment.

Today, THE GO-BETWEEN continues to unfold in the form of the Living Catalogue, an alternative to traditional curatorial publications, which proposes to continue thinking about the central themes brought up by THE GO-BETWEEN through a series of performative presentations on invitation.

THE GO-BETWEEN is a curatorial project, emerging from de Appel’s Curatorial Programme, which explores process-based ways of working.
